How to Estimate Repair Costs on a Salvage Car Before You Bid
Every bad Copart buy I've seen traces back to the same thing: the repair number was a guess. Not the fees, not the transport, not the market value. The repair number. Why your repair estimate is the number that decides everything
Your max bid formula only has one soft input. Market value you can pull from real transaction data. Fees are published. Transport is a quote. Repair cost is the only line you invent — and it's usually the biggest line on the sheet.
Miss market value by 5% on a $14,000 car and you lose $700. Miss the repair estimate by 40% on a $4,000 repair and you lose $1,600 — plus the weeks of shop time you didn't plan for. That's why the repair number is where the discipline has to go.
Build the estimate in three buckets, not one
Most flippers do this: look at the photos, think "that's maybe four grand," move on. That's not an estimate, that's a feeling. Split it.
1. Parts
Go line by line off the photos. Front-end hit isn't "front-end hit" — it's bumper cover, absorber, reinforcement bar, grille, hood, both headlamps, radiator support, condenser, radiator, fender, and about $80 of clips and brackets nobody remembers.
Price each one at what you'll actually pay, not MSRP. Used and aftermarket run 20–50% under OEM. Pull real sold prices, not asking prices — a listing at $340 that never sold tells you nothing. One caveat from the shop side: keep safety-critical and structural components OEM or certified reman. Aftermarket suspension and steering parts come back for a second repair roughly three times as often. On a car you're reselling, a comeback is your margin.
2. Labor and materials
Three separate rates, and mixing them up is where estimates go wrong:
- Body labor — the hours to pull, replace, and align panels
- Refinish labor — prep, prime, spray, blend
- Mechanical/sublet — alignment, A/C evac and recharge, scan and calibration
Then paint materials on top, roughly $30–$35 per refinish hour. Shop rates run $50–$90/hr depending on your market. Use your rate — the one you actually pay — not a national average.
3. Hidden damage contingency
Add 10–15% on top. Not pessimism — statistics. The photos show you what the camera could see from six angles in a Copart yard. They don't show a bent condenser mount, a cracked wiring harness, or a bumper bracket that snapped on the opposite side.
And in 2026, the line that quietly kills deals is calibration. Any car with a forward camera or radar module in the damaged zone needs ADAS calibration after the repair. That's a real invoice, and it belongs in the estimate before you bid, not after.

That's the number I take into the bid math — not $4,000 because it sounds round, and not $3,706 because that's the best case that never happens.
Turning the repair estimate into a max bid

Three mistakes I see constantly
Estimating from the damage code instead of the photos. "Front End" covers a $1,200 bumper scuff and a $7,000 structural hit. The code is a label, not an estimate. Read the damage listing properly.
Forgetting the car has to sit somewhere. Copart storage starts after three free days. Parts backorders don't care about your timeline. A repair that takes six weeks instead of three costs you the next flip.
Using retail labor rates on your own build. If you're paying $90/hr on paper but doing the work yourself, you're pricing yourself out of deals you'd actually profit on. Use your true cost.
